Yesterday marked the 12th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a catastrophic storm that claimed the lives of 1,500 people and damaged 200,000 properties. Sadly, as the sun rises this morning some of the same families who were affected by Hurricane Katrina and relocated to Houston are reliving similar tragedies.

So far, as a result of Hurricane Harvey the city of Houston and its surrounding areas have received over 50 inches or over 4 feet of rain, more than they would typically see in a year. News outlets are reporting at least 9 suspected storm related deaths and thousands of people have been left to seek shelter. The focus now is rescues and the amount of property damage remains to be assessed.

We are collecting donations to give directly to families we know who have been affected. Know someone who needs assistance? Email us directly at info@blackgirlswithpurpose.org with the email title “Disaster Relief.”
