Do not remember the past events, pay no attention to things of old. Look, I am about to do something new, even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert. – Isaiah 43:18-19

Have you ever read something that you had to come back to again and again? Maybe it’s a quote, your favorite book or a scripture. That’s what this verse has been for me. It was first put on my radar the week of August 8 when God called me and G to move to a new church and since then, it’s continued to transform in its meaning.

This past January I attended an event put on by Anna Donahue and one of my major takeaways from our time together was this quote “God wants to give you a new testimony.” This thought, this idea resonated so deeply with me that I knew, if I hadn’t learned anything from that evening, I had gained some incredible insight into what the future may hold for me.

In the past year, since my book has been published I’ve spoken countless times on suicide, worth, value and self-esteem. But as I reflected on on the past 6 months since I got pregnant, I realized God was in fact doing something new in me. He was adding faith to my inventory.

He told me at the beginning of the year that my word would be abundance – backing it up with Ephesians 3:20 – Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all we could ask or think. I chose to believe that this was a direct response to walking in obedience with Him and I committed myself to looking ahead with expectancy. To have the type of faith that says God is going to do something great in me and I committed myself to being open to whatever that may be.

When you read our focus verse for the day. It asks the question “Do you not see it?” I believe this to be one of the many times in scripture where God is asking a question that He’s not looking for an answer to as much as an action. I believe He knows that many times we can see the new thing He is doing in us. But He wants to know if we’re open to it. Will we embrace it? Or will we turn a blind eye and stick to the previous things He’s done in our lives.

Another thing I love about this scripture is the double meaning of past events at the beginning. It can literally be translated to mean, forget everything that’s happened up to this moment, past failures, past relationships, past hurts and heartbreaks and embrace the new. It also can mean, as Anna Donahue shared in her mini-conference, that we should not limit God to the things He’s done in the past. In the verse immediately preceding our focus scripture, the Lord is recognized as one who makes a way in the sea – this is a reference to His splitting the Red Sea for the Israelites so they could escape captivity from Egypt. This is one of the most widely recognized miracles in the Bible, yet God says “do not remember the past events.” He says to us, I know that was epic but you haven’t seen anything yet. I don’t know about you, but having that kind of knowledge makes things extremely exciting and it makes it so I can’t help but have faith in His plans. That’s why I trusted Him when I felt His Holy Spirit move me to turn in my letter of resignation at my job. As I wrote it, I felt this peace that said, “you’re on the right track” and for me, that’s all I need, no looking back.

What new thing is God trying to do in you today? What fears are keeping you from getting out of the boat and trusting Him? Share below in the comments.

Action steps:

  • Think about the way embracing this “new testimony” could change your life.
  • Write out what perceived unknowns there are and pray over them.
  • Ask for the courage to take the first step towards where God’s trying to get you to go
